I remember when you could just take the battery out to clear bios. And the clear bios jumper was normally 3 prongs and you would just move it over

On power supplies I absolutely must have modular cable systems. They make installation much easier, and make everything much nicer. You can even order up custom cables from some suppliers out there so you can get the style of cables you want in whatever color you want.
As of motherboards and GPUs, I insist on sold state or polymer caps. They have much better high temp and late life performance. This is a must on reliability. I also really like having at least two front panel USB 3.0 connectors on the motherboard. One for the case, and one for an accessory (such as a card reader). Getting an SD Card reader for the front of your computer is a nice feature. SD cards are much smaller then thumb drives, and generally are easier to find high speed models of.

As a note, the way you make a GPU quieter is not to have fewer fans, but to have more, and just have them turned down. This can be done by underclocking and undervoltaging the card. Depending on the VPU you can lift up the amp limiter to compensate for the undervoltaging. Newer cards can allow you to undervolt all speeds except turbo. This is a great option for reducing light usage and idle heat/noise.
Still, success at undervolting depends on silicon lottery just as much as overclocking.

Besides the points mentioned in the video. Proper case with dustfilters at the fans. I was mindblown when I upgraded from no name to a mid-high range Fractal design case. After 4 months of daily use, I opened it up and there was not one spec of dust inside. Granted I must clean the filters monthly even in an office environment where one would assume there's not that much of a dust.

The Must-have List. #1 build the Mb ON THE BOX (IT CAME IN)-Make sure it boots. This has been said; but say it again, and again... #2 put the CASE back panel shroud from the MB box into THE CASE. Double or triple check TO MAKE SURE IT IS snapped in ALL THE WAY AROUND! LTT just did a video on a staff member building their own computer & the person did not put the back shroud in!!

I love Self Adherent Cohesive Wrap Bandage - ....crickets chirping.... Okay, the reasons - it is a great way to change the color of any wires sets, as it is non conductive, easy to wrap, no adhesive, and lasts. Great for cable management as it takes very little and looks and works better then hard zip ties. Can easily wrap sharp metal objects or delicate parts. Cut it into small pieces for use as vibration reduction around screws or parts. Matches well with LED sets and safely wrap around leds if need. It easily wraps around 24-pin plugs, 4-pin power, and esp 6-8pin GFX card power plugs, allowing a clean uniform look. Also great to wrap tools to make them non-slip. More importantly ... it is cheap.

I just remember an Intergraph (computer graphics in the 80's) technician installing a disk controller card on a mini-computer, mini at that time meanig the size of a refrigerator. The guy told his fellow "the card is dead". "Why you say that?" said the other. He just showed a tiny 4-digit led display in the corner of the card with enough segments lit to display a quite readable "DEAD"! Artificial intelligence ahead of its time, deaths talking to us!

last build i did, i had extra cables on my table and thought the video card was plugged in to the monitor. apparently some graphics cards won't boot if they aren't plugged in. the motherboard wouldn't POST and would return 'CMOS error' thanks motherboard.... that's helpful. i find myself wondering why someone made the design decision for a video card to not POST without a monitor. that's intentional.

On the subject of SSD versus HDD, I've got two machines:
Gaming rig: (heavily-outdated because I haven't had enough money to upgrade)
    Samsung 860Evo SATA SSD
    Phenom II x6 2.8GHz hex-core CPU
    16GB Kingston DDR3 RAM, dual-channel
(I have a bunch of HDDs, about 6TB in total, holding my data and shiz, but Windows is booting off the 500GB SSD)
"stuff" rig: (primarily so I can do things like look at Discord and look up walkthroughs/wikis while doing other shit on the main rig)
    Core2Quad 2.4GHz
    8GB DDR3 RAM
some 320GB spinning rust IDK, maybe Western Digital
From simultaneous cold start, despite being on spinning rust versus the other rig's SSD, the Core2Quad reaches the Windows 10 login screen just a second or two behind the SSD.
    Anyone got any ideas why?

A warning about modular PSU cables: They are NOT necessarily interchangeable between manufacturers! I replaced a dead EVGA PSU with a Seasonic one recently, and I figured I could save a little time by reusing the cables from the EVGA PSU. Everything fit just fine, but when I booted up my PC, I blew out the motherboard. It's likely that vcc and ground, or +5V & +12V were swapped on the CPU power cables, which fried the VRMs.
Those cables aren't often branded either, so if you have a lot of them from different PSU manufacturers, label them or keep them separate. Don't make the mistake I did!

@Whitney Brooks I mean its not a problem I was just making a edgy comment, cos I'm a dick like that, I am pretty fortunate that I purchased a system in nov. last year that was faulty and they failed to fix it so in return they're building a new one to which they offered to put in a 3070 from build stock, they also did it for £100 under current MSRP. I'm in the UK so new jersey is no good for me :P

Hi Jay, for me as an IT PRO or GAMER it will not be the same as a usual user for sure. So Case smaller for a tight and neat casing for space or a casing for GAMER depending on the motherboard size. For the MB, i will go for the best as it is the one or most important component of the PC. Asus or MSI are my first choices. Then HD goes for the NVME naturally and for the graphics, its NVIDIA for sure mainly if it is for a gamer else integrated graphics are pretty cool nowdays for work. A bronze or silver PSU would be great also and here it is!

And for the love of god, don't place buttons, PCIe ejector thingies and M.2 covers so that you have to take apart half the computer to access them. I'm talking to you, Asus. Especially when the sole reason is to look cool. Also, placing the chipset fan so that it is covered up when a GPU is installed in slot one? Uhm...

  • TickleSlip

People should be aware that if they go the NVME route, depending on their mobo, to be remindful that NVME drives use 4x PCIe lanes. If you have a stacked system; a mobo with two NVME ports, 8x SATA ports, and several PCIe slots for GFX and/or Sound or other 1x PCIe slot usage....that in order to keep your 16x for your single graphics card, you can have only 2x NVME drives and up to 4 SATA drives plugged in. Of course the motherboard itself has separate PCIe lanes for USB ports; typically enough for all the slots on the given board plus any case ports.
SO NVME's = awesome. But, also take away from potential PCIe lanes depending on what someone is doing with their system.
Also first like minute of vid....LUL

Been building computers since 1989 and I've never needed 90% of these things. Especially all the motherboard features. That just seems like fluff for millennials who are scared of manuals. The only thing I'd agree with is SSD and maybe multiple fans on the GPU (but most of the time you're not gonna have any choice in the matter, so kind of pointless).
Some of these tips seem to have come out of 2010 though. Who in 2021 is like "uhhh I don't want an SSD"? And the thing about when the graphics card isn't doing anything.. Must not be running any recent operating system then, since they are all constantly using the graphics card for animations and such.
